NZPI Accredited Degrees
The New Zealand Planning Institute supports programmes that foster links with fields of study allied to planning, so long as the core of planning knowledge and skills is maintained in a coherent fashion.
Diversity in planning programmes is encouraged so that specialist disciplinary knowledge becomes available to the planning profession (e.g. core knowledge and skills plus: remote sensing and geographic information systems, engineering geology, natural ecology, Maori language and culture, or social anthropology).
The following Universities currently offer Planning Degrees accredited by NZPI:
University of Auckland
With a University of Auckland planning qualification, you will be well equipped for a range of career opportunities, both in New Zealand and overseas.
The University of Auckland's School of Architecture and Planning urban planning degrees including subjects covering urban design, land use economics, urban planing law, policy-making and implementation, community and economic development, housing issues, Māori perspectives, cultural and heritage planning, infrastructure provision and urban ecology .
Career options in urban planning include working in central and local government, community groups, Iwi authorities, NGOs and private practice. Auckland graduates are currently employed throughout New Zealand, Asia, the Pacific, the UK, Europe, Australia and North America.

The Resource and Environmental Planning degrees from Massey University focus on urban development and environmental themes.
All courses are intended to provide the knowledge, understanding, skills and tools through which planners can promote the sustainable development of natural and physical resources to meet the needs of current and future generations.

Otago University
The planning programme at the University of Otago is recognised nationally and internationally for its professional excellence.
The programme comprises a balanced curriculum, with lectures, seminars, field experience and research and with considerable emphasis of gaining practical experience in both self-learning and team situations. An important feature of the programme is its interdisciplinary approach. Emphasis is placed on attracting candidates from a wide range of academic backgrounds including arts, science, law, Maori studies and commerce. A range of skills needs to be brought together to address environmental and community issues. Students are encouraged to use these diverse skills to analyse the social, political and bio-physical context of environmental policy making.
